Twenty-six years at maritime industry, one offshore wind farm and a role where no two days are alike. Meet Alexander Uloth, O&M Site Manager and Head of Operations at Arcadis Ost 1, who is leading the work to keep the wind farm operating safely and efficiently.
The first conversation of the day
For Alexander, a working day often starts with two things: looking at what is happening across Arcadis Ost 1 and catching up with the team in Mukran, Germany over a coffee.
The conversation can move quickly from weekend plans to turbine performance, offshore activity or a technical challenge. For a team of seven, those everyday exchanges matter.
“They help us build trust,” Alexander says. “When something difficult happens, that trust makes us stronger as a team.”
Alexander leads the operations and maintenance team at Arcadis Ost 1. Together, they are responsible for keeping the offshore wind farm operating safely, efficiently and in an environmentally responsible way.
The role covers daily operations and maintenance, contractor coordination, performance monitoring and regulatory compliance. It also requires the team to respond quickly when circumstances change.
Replacing the heart of a turbine
One of the team’s biggest challenges during JERA Nex bp’s first year was replacing several of the wind farms generators.
“Replacing a generator is a major operation,” Alexander explains. “In many ways, it’s like replacing the heart of a wind turbine.”
The work involved far more than completing the replacements. The team worked with suppliers and technical specialists, including visiting manufacturing facilities. Colleagues and contractors across Germany and Belgium also contributed to the response.
“It required technical expertise and persistence, but above all, it required people to work together. Maintaining safe operations while we found a solution was a real achievement.”
What people might not expect
Alexander’s job is not confined to turbines or offshore activity.
On any given day, he could be troubleshooting a technical issue, coordinating contractors, reviewing operational data or discussing budgets and regulatory requirements. The Mukran team is small and hands-on, so everyone is prepared to contribute beyond their formal responsibilities when needed.
“The sheer variety would probably surprise people,” he says. “No two days are the same, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most.”
From one life at sea to another
Before joining the offshore wind industry, Alexander spent more than 26 years working at sea. His connection to maritime life began much earlier: his father was a captain on a large tanker vessel.
Today, the sea remains a central part of both his professional and family life.
Alexander lives with his wife, Susanne, and their two sons in a small village on the island of Rügen. In summer, the family enjoys sailing and taking part in local regattas. They also spend time cycling, fishing and hiking, while winter usually brings a family skiing trip.
“Rügen gets quite busy during the summer, so we like to head out onto the water and enjoy some time together.”
